Ordering & Delivery

Ordering & Delivery

Every Black Barn piece is made to order. There is no warehouse, no stock to clear, and no standard configuration sitting in a factory somewhere. What you commission is made specifically for you, in our workshop in Wiltshire, by the same hands that have been making furniture here since 1988.

This page explains how the ordering process works, what to expect during the making period, and how your piece will reach you.

Step 1 — The Conversation

Every commission begins with a conversation. This can be by phone, by email, or in person at the workshop — whichever suits you. We will talk through the piece you have in mind, the room it is going into, how it will be used, and your fabric thoughts if you have any.

If you are working with an interior designer, we are happy to liaise with them directly or to work through you — whichever is preferred. We have experience working alongside architects, kitchen designers, and interior designers on whole-room commissions and are comfortable with the specification process that entails.

There is no obligation at this stage. We would rather spend time getting the brief right than rush to a quotation that does not suit your needs.

Call us on 01672 600006 or email hello@blackbarnsofas.com to begin.

Step 2 — The Quotation

Once we have a clear brief — piece, dimensions, fabric, and any specific requirements — we will provide a written quotation. This will include the price for the piece, an indication of lead time, and any clarifying notes on specification.

Quotations are valid for 30 days. If your fabric or specification changes after the quotation is issued, we will revise accordingly.

For pieces requiring a site visit — made-to-measure banquettes, window seats, and fitted work — we will arrange a measure before the quotation is finalised. We cover Wiltshire, Somerset, Dorset, Hampshire, and parts of Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire without a call-out charge. Further afield can be arranged — please ask.

Step 3 — Confirmation & Deposit

To confirm an order, we ask for a deposit of 50% of the total price. Work begins once the deposit is received and, where COM is being used, once the fabric has arrived in the workshop.

We will confirm the start date and expected completion date in writing at this point. If anything changes during the making period — if a fabric is delayed or a specification needs adjusting — we will contact you immediately.

Lead Times

Lead times vary depending on what is already in the workshop. As a general guide:

Piece Typical lead time
Scatter cushions & squabs 2–4 weeks
Dining chairs & bedroom chairs 6–10 weeks
Armchairs 8–12 weeks
Sofas 10–16 weeks
Banquettes & window seats 8–12 weeks
Headboards & blanket boxes 8–12 weeks

If you have a specific deadline — a house move, a completion date, or an event — tell us at the outset and we will be honest about whether it is achievable. We do not promise lead times we cannot meet.

Step 4 — Making

Once work begins, we will keep you informed at key stages — when the frame is built, when the piece is in filling, and when we are ready to cut the cover. If you would like to visit the workshop during the making period, you are very welcome to.

For pieces where the fabric has a large pattern repeat or a particularly complex cut, we may ask you to approve a cut layout before proceeding. This adds a day or two but avoids any misunderstanding about pattern placement.

Step 5 — Completion & Balance

When your piece is complete, we will send photographs for your approval before it leaves the workshop. The balance of the total price is due on completion, before delivery is arranged.

We accept bank transfer and most major credit and debit cards.

Delivery

We deliver to most of the UK using a specialist two-person furniture delivery service. Pieces are wrapped in blankets and transit-protected before loading, and delivered into the room of your choice. We do not use pallet couriers or standard parcel services for upholstered furniture.

Delivery is quoted separately from the piece and will be confirmed at the quotation stage. As a guide, delivery within Wiltshire and neighbouring counties is typically £75–£150. London and further afield varies depending on access and the number of pieces.

For particularly large or complex deliveries — banquettes being installed in a kitchen, for example — Roy or a member of the team will attend to ensure the piece is fitted correctly.

We do not currently deliver outside mainland Great Britain, but can arrange collection for international shipments if you have a freight forwarder in place.

Any Questions

If anything here is unclear, or if your situation does not fit neatly into the above, please just call or email. We would rather answer a question at the outset than have any uncertainty once work is underway.
